I have continued to have some minor problems with pain and swelling with my left foot in the three months since I returned from the Camino de Santiago. Of Course, I have been very busy with a move, beginning a new ministry, moving into a new community, and generally getting settled in life. I finally got to a podiatrist last week. And here is the result of that visit. I consider this my "final photo of the Camino." Dr. Boccio is pointing to a very clear fracture of the 5th metatarsal of my left foot. He said that the decision of both physicians in Spain NOT to x-ray was sound medically. Stress Fractures often do not show up on x-rays right after they happen. While both Spanish doctors seemed content that it was okay for me to walk and "take it easy" and "listen to my foot" for the rest of the Camino, I probably should have stopped. In this case, I am fine that the fracture was not diagnosed, because if it had been, I probably would not have finished the Camino. At this point we are working on getting it good and healed. I finished the Camino nursing that foot every step of the way and in a little bit of pain. On the whole, every painful step was worth it!
